Originally designed by Revel Fox Architects, 9 Dorp Street carries considerable architectural significance as one of the most prominent modernist buildings in the Cape Town CBD. Jacobs Parker Architects was commissioned to design a consolidated public interface facility, housing motor vehicle licensing counters, a tender opening room, open plan offices and a cashier’s counter.

A new public entrance is denoted by a black aluminium canopy and vertical tender drop box, which complements the proportions and materiality of the existing building elements. Internally, a simple palette of materials in black, white and glass creates a subdued and transparent architecture which allows artwork and information screens to be displayed as animating features.
