This apartment refurbishment, yielded many opportunities to contest the standard apartment typology. The brief was an efficient use of space and an incorporation of a cape dutch aesthetic.
The largest and most defining gesture is the introduction of a diagonal wall that directs the occupants to the most significant view. This wall draws its inspiration from traditional cape dutch architecture in its mass and articulation. The thickness was given an appropriate function, becoming a service wall housing and compressing several functions that allows the remaining space to be as spacious and flexible as possible given the small footprint.
The making of opening, materials used and the use of shutters are further references to cape dutch architecture reinterpreted in a contemporary manner.
